Always quote internal dimensions
Packaging is specified by internal size — the usable cavity — in length × width × height, in millimetres. A rigid box built with 2 mm board and a wrap adds roughly 5 mm to each external dimension over the internal size. If you send external dimensions without saying so, the finished box will be too small for your product.
Measuring the product
Measure the product at its widest, deepest and tallest points, including caps, pumps, handles and any protruding label. For a set, lay the items out in the arrangement you want inside the box and measure the whole footprint.
- Length — the longest horizontal edge
- Width — the deepest horizontal edge
- Height — including cap, pump or lid
- Weight — filled, not empty
Adding clearance
Add clearance for the insert and for handling. As a starting point, allow 2–3 mm around each side for a paperboard insert and more for foam, which needs wall thickness to compress. For sets, allow for a divider between each item.
If you cannot measure accurately
Send the product, or a photograph of the product beside a ruler, and an existing box if you have one. We will take the measurements here and confirm them on the die-line before anything is cut.
